What does it mean to identify?
To establish the nature of a situation by distinguishing its features and naming them
What does it mean to describe?
To provide characteristics of a situation explaining what is observed
What does it mean to discuss?
To show understanding of a situation by presenting both sides of the event and including strengths and weaknesses of available data
What does it mean to explain?
To relate the cause and effect and give reasons why a situation exists
What does it mean to quantify?
To use numbers or statistics to describe a phenomenon and support conclusions
What does it mean to locate?
To discover the place or position of a certain location
What does it mean to label?
To assign something to a certain category
What does it mean to annotate?
To add labels, comments or explanatory notes to images, maps or graphs
What does it mean to assess?
To weigh up the value or judge the strengths and weaknesses of something
What does it mean to evaluate?
To weigh up and interpret a statement or situation, with a focus on the outcome or result
What can geographic characteristics be divided into?
Physical characteristics such as climate and hydrology or human characteristics such as language and religion
What are the seven concepts for developing geographical understanding?
Place, space, environment, interconnection, sustainability, scale and change
What does place describe?
A part of the Earth’s surface that is identified and given meaning by people
What does space describe?
The way things are arranged on the Earth’s surface
What does environment describe?
The living and non-living components and elements that make up an area
What does interconnection describe?
The links between places and people and how they affect the environment
What does sustainability describe?
The ongoing capacity of the Earth to maintain all life
What does scale describe?
Geographical inquiries
What does change help us to understand?
What is happening around us and to see the world as a dynamic place
What must you do when asked to demonstrate the distribution of a certain form of data?
Describe the general pattern, show specific examples of the pattern stated and identify an anomaly that does not fit the general pattern
What does BOLTSS stand for and what does it help remember?
Helps to remember the six essential features on a map, which are border, orientation, legend, title, scale and source
What does SALTS stand for and what does it help remember?
Helps to remember the five conventions that should always be included on a graph, which are scale, axis, legend, title and source
