ambiguous, not specific to willy, would just be any man, any salesman, hes not defined as a father, a husband, an individual at all - just how society sees him (possibly line to “a dime a dozen act 2)

solid vault traps their fragile home - could argue their house is symbollic of willy himself, it is not only the house that is trapped by modernity but will himself too

foreshadowing? excessive tiredness will lead to profound psychological disturbances and problems and when willy is “past sixty years of age” and still on the road 24/7 of course he is going to be exhausted - hamster wheel idea.

Linda appears to manage him, making excuses and doesnt want to face up to the problem, she doesnt want to admit willys mental state to herself, just as much as will doesnt want to admit it to himself/ linda.

Idea of this rat race + irony of life living this american dream, tragedy is that willy sees this but is too engrossed in this life that he cannot allow himself to escape it.

willy sees the success of a man through how muvh money he makes (and how well liked a man is) - is this a consequence of the american dream? is this really a mark of success?

dismissive of biff - is this in a way jealousy? (of course it is dissapointment too) but there is an element of irony as willy fantasises about nature, and is good at working with his hands yet criticises Biff for working in nature even though it makes him happy.

complete contraduction, shows his lack of clarity in his own mind, conflicting emotions and fragility (also his temperamental behaviour/modd swings - could link to psych/social time)

represents failure and his hopes and dreams not playing out. destruction and failure of nature = willys present day.

Removed from reality, almost an inability to separate present from the past and an inability to distinguish dimensions which becomes evermore evident as play continues.

Happy is tall powerfully made…he like his brother is lost.. has never allowed himself to turn his face towards defeat.. seemingly more content SD

Willy is also lost and there are many similarities between happy and willy - both caught up in the american dream. Happy is almost a mirror of willy - is Biff therefore the real hero? is willy merely the villain? the antihero.

Biff rejects the idea of the american dream, sees it for what it is - a rat race. Perhaps miller himself putting forward his own views through biff.
“theres nothing more inspiring or beautiful… i suddenly get the feeling, my God, I’m not getting anywhere” Biff

Biff is lost and conflicted. His passion is the cuase of the conflict between what he wants and what society but more importantly what his father deems as successful.
“you’re a success, arent you? are you content?”(B)

again a critisism of the american dream: happy is unhappy whilst engrossed in the american dream yet biff is conflicting as he feels a failure because he is not engrossed in the american dream

Happy is enthralled by the idea of working outside, in a ranch or whatnot, but like willy - happy does not let himself follow that dream because it is less socially accpeted as success - because it is less financiallyy rewarding.
- raises question of what is more important - person reward or financial reward?
“maybe i just have an overdeveloped sense of competition or something” “ i hate myself for it because i dont want the girl, and still i take it and - i love it” Happy

- Happy appears competition driven by social expectations, perhaps comes from childhood, competition for his fathers attention
- A jealousy in Happy, a smugness - egotistical, in his mind if he can look at these men who are more succesfull (business wise) than him knowing he has had their wife/gf he feels like he has one upped them?
- “the girl” “it” - sexual arrogance and an empty optinimism , womanising villain who has no regard for women - perhaps links to “the woman” not having a name - are the women in this play mere props to highlight characteristics of the men?

Is his job as a man to keep working until he makes enough money for his sons (biff mostly) - dies contently at the end thinking he has done so.

almost takes ride in his sons wrongdoings - as if theyre in kahoots. Biff later tells willy this was one of the reasons for his failure ( act 2 “i stole myself out of every good job since high school!…And i never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air i could never stand taking orders from anybody!’

All about status to willy, he seems to value popularity more than qualifications or finance. Idea of american dream and what he teaches his boys is the most important.
