A

After the fall of Rome there was no central government. Invaders moved in and created many small kingdoms. The creation of these kingdoms began the Middle Ages.

What was the Donation of Pepin and why was it important to Pepin III and the Pope?

A

Pepin III helped the church by defeating the Lombards. Pepin III donated the land to the church as a gift. By doing this the Papal States were created and the alliance (team work) between church and state was strengthened.

What caused the Frankish Empire to decline? (include the treaty)

A

When Louis the Pios had taken power, he lacked a vision for the future. His 3 sons—Lothar, Charles the Bald and Louis the German—fought amongst each other and finally came to an agreement, the Treaty of Verdun, which split the empire into three equal kingdoms. This was the beginning of the decline of the Frankish Empire.

Explain the three ways of determining guilt or innocence during the Middle Ages.

A

Feudal Justice.

1) Trial by battle. Duel to the death, last person standing is innocent.
2) Trial by ordeal. Person was tortured and if they healed quickly the person was innocent, if not, he was guilty.
3) Compurgation/oath taking (fairest form). Accused would take oath and have character witnesses swear they believed the accused.

A

The King was most powerful and owned the land. The kind granted land to important nobles in exchange for loyalty and military support. The peasants worked on the land and could not leave without permission.

A

The code of conduct for knights was called Chivalry. Knights were expected to have courage in battle, fight fairly, be loyal to friends, keep promises, and be kind to women.
