What to consider upon arrival
A
- Note circumstances of how you were informed of the incident, gather relevant statements.
- Ensure safety of child immediately
- Medical attention (if injured)
- Contact local social work
- contact supervisor
- note conditions of those present (both children and adults) - Drink/drugs? Aggressive/passive/helpful/obstructive? Children upset/clean/dressed?
- Living conditions - clean/filthy? food/sanitary conditions?

When does a father have parental responsibilities
A
- If he was married to the mother at conception or thereafter
- If he has been given them by court order
- If he has agreed rights and responsibilities with the mother and these have been legally registered
- If he is recorded on the child’s birth certificate and the birth was registered on or after 4th May 2006

When can the parental responsibilities of the mother be revoked?
A
- If she is an unreformed alcoholic
- If she has a serious drug addiction
- If she has a serious mental health condition

When should a child be prosecuted in the courts?
A
- Crime/offence would be dealt with on indictment or solemn procedure
- Offence would result in a child of 15 years or over being disqualified from driving
- Child is 16 but not 18 and the reporter has terminated the supervision order

When should a child be arrested?
A
Only if:
- the crime is serious, or
- it’s necessary to revoke the child from bad associations, or
- liberation would defeat the ends of justice
If child is not to be released then they must be detained in a place of safety other than a police station unless:
- its impractical to detain him/her elsewhere
- child is so unruly that he/she cannot be detained elsewhere
- by reason of physical/mental health they should not be detained elsewhere
