Explain God as saving from the Old Testament.
Acts of Exodus- marks the liberation of Jewish people in Israel to be God’s people and to follow His laws. Psalms references Exodus, reminding Jewish people of how God is their creator and led them out of Egypt, drowning the Pharoah’s army and giving them the promised land of Canaan and increased their tribe.
Explain God as Saving in the New Testament.
Through Jesus, God heals diseases (blindness, lepers, deafness, dumbness, lame), exorcises evil and accepts death for our forgiveness and eternal life. Jesus’ moral teachings require belief in saving God who will award humanity where the world will not (Beatitudes, New Law, unconditional love of neighbour and enemies).
Explain God as Just in the Old Testament.
10 Commandments and other Levitical laws and Prophetic Books (Jeremiah, Amos, Micah, Isaiah, etc.) emphasise concern for the poor and oppressed.
Micah 6:8- “What does the Lord demand of you O man? Only this: to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your Lord.”
Explain God as Just in the New Testament.
Sins are forgiven “if you forgive those who sin against you”

God’s mercy necessitates care and compassion for the poor. Every 7 years Israel would declare a Sabbath year when property sold in repayment of debts would be returned to its original owners and equality restored. God only willing to forgive sin if repentance includes justice for the poor.

God as saving through Jesus. God’s acts are greater here than the OT as they reflect his greatness, faithfulness and love, concerning the salvation and restoration of all in God.

(Exodus 34: 6-7) God appears to Moses on Mount Sinai (“the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger”, “He forgives iniquity, transgression, and sin.”)
