When suspecting a UTI - the presence of loin pain and rigors suggests what type of UTI ?
Upper - e.g. pylonephritis
Why is nitrofuratonin not given for upper UTI’s ?
Because it has a high failure rate

Because it doesn’t work on Coliiformes
What protective equipment is required when handling patients with a UTI?
Gloves and apron should be worn when emptying urine containers
What is the KEY thing to consider when deciding to give antibiotics to someone with a possible UTI ?
- If they are symptomatic or not
- If they are not symptomatic then DONT give antibiotics
What is the only exception which would cause you to give antibiotics to a patient who is not symptomatic for a UTI?
If they are pregnant and have bacteruria
What is the most common STI’s ?
Chlamydia and 2nd to that is gonorrhoea
What patients do you not dip stick there urine ?
Catheterised patients and old people
What is the treatment for mild c.diff infections ?
Metronidazole
What is the treatment for severe C.diff infections ?
Vancomycin
When handling a patient with C.diff what protective equipment is required?
- Full protection
- Separate room etc
