Consumption?
The act of using media products (watching,listening, reading etc.)
What are established rules/shared understandings used in media products called?

Defines groups based on things such as age, gender , nationality etc.
Dominant signifier?
The most important (usually the largest) image/signifier on a text
What are the elements chosen by producers that are all seen on screen?

Patriarchy?
A system or society in which men are all-powerful annd women are excluded from positions of influence or responsibility, weaker
Polysemic?
A sign or message that can have multiple different meanings
Define representation in media.
How media texts present social groups (gender, identity, social issues etc.)
- very powerful tool in terms of influencing ideas and attitudes
Selection?
What has been chosen to be included in a piece of media
- e.g. newspaper articles may choose to take out info + select facts that can change the perspective of the consumer, bias
basically what is excluded can sometimes be as important as what is included
Ideology?
The ideas and beliefs held by media producers, often reflected/represented in their media texts
- e.g. ideology of a senior editor of a newspaper could influence the way stories are represented, lending support to a specific political party
