Space + meaning
- can be seen as a definite location on a map or may refer to the description of the human and physical characteristics of a particular location.

A place where something happens or is she, or that has particular events associated with it
Insider perspective
The perspective of someone who knows a place well and is familiar with not only its topography but also its daily rhythms and events
Outsider perspective
The perspective of someone who does not know a place well (visitor) or someone who is marganilised in community such as the homeless or people from minority groups.
Near and far places
The geographical distance or the emotional connection with a particular place and how comfortable a person feels within a place
Experienced place
Those places that a person has spent time in
Media places
Those places that a person has only read about or seen in a film etc.
Endogenous factors
Factors within a place that helps shape its character e.g. location, topography, physical geography, land use, built environment and infrastructure, demographic and economic characteristics.
Exogenous factors
Factors outside a place that give a place that force a change in a places character e.g. people (migrants come from outside to live/work), capital (business investment from outside an area), resources, ideas (urban planners architect, businesses and artists).
What are the forces in the change making process
- local community groups (can resist change e.g. parish council)
- national government (policy)
- international organisations (the EU)
- global institutions (world trade organisation)
- national institutions (non government institution -> national trust)
- local government (county council)
- individuals (activists and celebrities)
- TNC’s (changing economic fortunes -> Amazon)
Representation
The cultural practices by which human societies interpret and portray the world around them and present themselves to others
Identity
An assemblage of personal characteristics such as gender, sexuality, race and religion.
Belonging
A sense of being par of a collective identity
