Thomas Wriothesley
–> Had been a royal servant under HVIII, working for both Wolsey and Cromwell
–> Although religiously conservative, it had not stopped him from gaining land from the Dissolution of the Monasteries
1540 = Became principal secretary
1544 = Appointed Lord Chancellor
–> Although he was an executor of Henry’s will and created Earl of Southamption, he lost his position under Somerset
–> He was later readmitted and helped to bring Somerset down
Lady Jane Grey
Distant claim to the throne through her grandfather, the Duke of Suffolk, had married Mary - Henry VII’s sister
Unlikely she knew of the plot or the decision to make her Queen until just before her proclamation as Queen
Little doubt she wanted nothing to do with the decision
Martin Bucer
Arried in ENG in 1549 + appointed Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge
BUT not the only foreign theologian
Peter Martyr
Arrived in Eng 1547 + became Regious Professor of Divinity at Oxford
Bernard Ochino
Came with Martyr and worked at Canterbury
John Foxe
–> Protestant who went into exile during the reign of Mary
–> Returned to England during the reign of Elizabeth and wrote his Book of Maryrs = described the burnings of Mary’s reign
= Book was a best seller + Elizabeth ordered a copy to be placed in every Church
Commonwealth Writers
Name given to a group of writers who took a moral view about the economy
Believed the wealthy had an obligation to the poor + everyone should work for the common good ie. the Commonwealth
SOME historians argued that these writers influenced Somersets policies BUT this view = no longer seen as valid
