1922 many Russian writers and scholars were deported plus pre-publication censorship was introduced.

100,000 Red Army soldiers brutally suppressed the revolt.

Attack on the church which was seen as a rival power

A

At the start of the NEP the Church enjoyed a revival bit in 1921 the Union of the Militant Godless was set up. Its aim sign to challenge the Church.

In 1922 they set out to strip churches of precious items to help the famine victims. Violent clashes occurred when local people and priests tried to save their churches.

Leaders of the Russian orthodox church were given death penalties and thousands of priests were imprisoned.
