Key features Flashcards
What are the key features of an upper canine
- crown is a broad diamond shape
- distal border is longer and steeper with the distal point of contact being located in the middle of the crown
- mesial border is shorter and the mesial point of contact is more incisal than the distal
- strongest and longest root in human dentition
what are the key features of a lower canine
- edges are much less flared than the uppers with the crown more symmetrical
- mesial border of the cusp is shorter and less steep than the distal border
- labial surface is lingually inclined
- curvature of cervical line more prominent on mesial surface than distal
What are the key features of an upper central incisor
- palatal surface deeply concaved like a scoop
- mesio-incisal edge sharp and more right angled than distal which is more rounded
- curvature of cervical line more prominent on mesial surface than distal
- almost as wide as it is long
- may have mammelons
what are the key features of an upper lateral incisor
- much more slender than central incisor
- palatal surface has 2 distinct marginal ridges which meet at the cervix, may form fossa which is susceptible to caries
- distal edge more rounded than mesio-incisal edge
- curvature of cervical line more prominent on mesial surface than distal
What are the key features of a lower central incisor
- crown appears flat and almost symmetrical
- crown is lingually inclined
- curvature of cervical line more prominent on mesial surface than distal
- may have mammelons
What are the key features of a lower lateral incisor
- crown flares/ is more fan like than a central
- mesial side slightly larger than distal
- mesio-incisal edge more right angled than distal which is rounded
- curvature of cervical line more prominent on mesial surface than dista
What are the key features of an upper first pre molar
- buccal surface is much wider and slightly higher than palatal
- mesial surface is have convex/ half concave due to CANINE FOSSA
- majority have 2 roots
- developmental groove on mesial marginal ridge
- marked mesial displacement of the lingual cusp
What are the key features of an upper second pre molar
- two cusps of similar height and width
- one root
- fissure does not meet either marginal ridge
- slight mesial displacement of lingual cusp
- distal marginal ridge is located more cervically than mesial
What are the key features of a lower first pre molar
- Lingual surface much narrower and much lower than buccal
- buccal surface strongly lingually inclined
- mesial contact point is smaller than the broad distal contact point
- often a small groove from mesial pit to mesio-lingual surface
- medial marginal ridge more cervical than distal
What are the key features of a lower second pre molar
- buccal cusp lingually inclined
- buccal and lingual cusps are similar heights
- lingual cusp is either mesially displaced or if there are 2 cusps the mesial is the largest
- distal marginal ridge is located more cervically than mesial
What are the key features of an upper first molar
- 3 roots - 2 buccal one palatal
- deep fissure separating disto-palatal cusp which is the smallest
- mesio-palatal cusp is the biggest
- H shaped fissure
- diamond shaped occlusal surface
- TUBERCLE OF CARABELLI may be present on palatal surface of mesio-palatal cusp
What are the key features of an upper second molar
- 3 roots - 2 buccal 1 palatal
- 4 cusps but may look like 3 as DISTO-PALATAL CUSP IS GREATLY REDUCED
- mesio-palatal cusp is largest
What are the key features of a lower first molar
- only tooth with 5 CUSPS
- buccal side has 3 cusps with the distal being the smallest
- fissure running mesio distally that branches to run either side of ditto-buccal cusp
- 2 roots, one messiah one distal
What are the key features of a lower second molar
- square shaped occlusal surface with cross shaped fissure
- mesio-buccal cusp is the largest
- lingual cusps are higher/ stand prouder/ straighter
- medial root broader than the distal root
