What did the Treaty of Versailles mean for Germany? Date?
June 1919
- had to take the blame for the war
- armed forced majorly reduced
- forced to pay £6600 million in reparations
- lost its empire in areas around the world (put under control of the League of Nations)
- Germany military banned from the Rhineland
Why did Germany hate the Treaty of Versailles?
- couldn’t afford reparations
- didn’t accept guilt for starting the war
- lost industrial areas and unable to rebuild
- suffered an economic crisis
- lost colonies
- lost pride without armed forces
- didn’t accept defeat
- often lived under foreign rule in new countries
What happened in the Spartacist Revolt? Date?
1919
Led by Liebknecht and Luxemburg- Communists tried to take over Berlin but were defeated by the Freikorps
What happened in the Kapp Putsch? Date?
1920
Lead by Wolfgang Kapp- Friekorps took over Berlin to form another government but workers staged a General Strike so Kapp gave up
What happened when Germany couldn’t pay the Reparations? Date?
1923
- French and Belgium troops occupied the Ruhr to take resources instead
- workers in the Ruhr refused to work
- Hyperinflation is caused
What happened during hyperinflation?
Production cant keep up with the amount of money there is so the money keeps losing its value
What was involved in the Dawes Plan? Date?
1924
- USA lends money to Germany
- Germany pays back France + Britain
- France + Britain pay the debts to USA
- replaced by the Young Plan 1929- reparations reduced and Germany given more time to pay
What was the Locarno Treaty? Date?
1925
Stresemann agreed to it and western borders of Germany were agreed
What happened inn the Munich Putsch? Date?
1923
Hitler planned to overthrow the Weimar goverement and his soldiers occupied a beer hall before Hitler marched into Munich (but stopped by police)
What was iiinvolved in the Great Depression? Date?
1931
- over 6 milliion unemployed
- Germany’s biggest bank collapsed
- Weimar Republlic collapsing
- extremist groups like the Nazis more popular because of strong leadership promises
What happened in the Night of the Long Knives?
- Hitler wanted to stamp out any potential opposition (particularly Rohm as head of the SA)
- Several hundred people killed including Rohm, Strasser and von Schleicher
When were the Nuremberg Laws passed and what did they include?
1935 by the Nazis
- stopped Jews from being German citizens
- banned marriage and sexual relationships between Jews and non-Jews
What happened during Kritallnacht (The Night of the Broken Glass)? Date?
1938
A Jew murdered a German diplomat which caused rioting in Germany (Jewish shops smashed and Jews arrested)
Nazi propaganda caused people to believe Jews were bad so should be sent to camps or mistreated in public.
What was involved in the Final Solution? Date?
1942
The Nazis’ plan to destroy the Jewish people with Himmler (head of SS) in charge of it
- Death camps and gas chambers built for mass murder
- black people, homosexuals, disabled people and communists also targeted
