CJEU
-Highest court
-Interprets + applies EU treaties (give definitive interpretations of the TFEU and TEU)
-Individuals r able to apply but must meet certain requirements
-Preliminary reference procedure: member state might be adjudicating eu law n might have a q on how the treaty applies in that circumstance.
Court will adjourn domestic proceeding n send to CJEU who will give answer
Commission
- Proposes or comes up with new legislation for eu
- Will write a draft, put it before council of minister n european parliament
- can also ensure states r complying with eu law by bringing them before cjeu or investigating
- made up of 47 members. 1 member per state.
- members rep the interests of eu as a whole
European council
-heads of state of each member state
eg PM would be one
-meet 2x a year
-decide overall policy & objectives + directions of eu
Council of ministers
-Ministers of members of the executive of member state
eg if they were gonna do suin on education, they’d want minister of education from each state to join
-vote alongside european parliament on legislation proposed by commission on specific thing
-council of M dont propose legislation, only council do
-they can require commission to submit a proposal on x topic
European Parliament
- members who are elected in each state
- those MPs are allocated a number of seats according to population of country
- also vote on whether to adopt legislation proposed by commission + power to require com to submit proposals
