What is an extended family?
A family that includes parents, grandparents and children.
What is a reconstituted, blended or step family?
A family created by the marriage of 2 adults, who have children from previous relationships.
What is a single parent family?
A family that consists of an adult and their child.
What is co-habitation?
Adults in a sexual relationship (not married) who live together.
What is a same-sex couple?
A couple where adults are of the same sex.
What is a matriarchal family?
A family that is headed by the mother.
What is a patriarchal family?
A family where the father holds power, that centres and serves the needs of its male members.
What is a nuclear family?
The ‘traditional’ family, consisting of a mother, father and their children living under one roof.
What is a household?
Consists of either:
- one person who lives alone
- group of people who live at the same address and who share at least one meal or facilities (e.g a group of friends)
What is Living Apart Together (LAT)?
Two adults in a consensual, sexual relationship, but do not have a house together.
