Key Definitions Flashcards
Define system
A set of interrelated components working together towards some kind of process
Define closed system
These have transfers of energy both into and beyond the system boundary, but no transfer of matter
Define open system
These have transfers of energy and matter from the system boundary into the surrounding environment
Define isolated system
These have no interaction with anything outside of the system boundary.
There is no input or output of energy or matter.
Define dynamic equilibrium
Where there is a balance between the inputs and outputs in a system
Define positive feedback
Where the effects of an action are amplified / multiplied by its subsequent knock on effects
Define negative feedback
Where the effects of an action are cancelled out by its subsequent knock on effects
Define atmosphere
The blanket of gas surrounding a planet
Define biosphere
The space on or near the earth’s surface that contains living organisms / supports life
Define lithosphere
The solid outermost part of the earth -> brittle upper mantel, crust.
Define hydrosphere
All the waters on, below or above the earth’s surface
Define Cryosphere
The frozen water part of the earth’s system
Define cascading system
The interlinking of multiple components to form a larger system.
Eg earth’s major subsystems are interlinked -> cascading system.
Define coast
A natural interface between the land and the sea
