Key Definitions Flashcards
Compound
A compound is made up of two or more different elements chemically joined together in fixed ratio by mass
Element
An element is a simple substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance by use of chemical means such as heat and electricity. It consists of only one type of atom. Examples can be found on the periodic table.
Mixture
A mixture is made up of two or more elements or compounds which are physically joined together (as opposed to chemically bonded). They can be easily separated, using methods such as filtration, evaporation, chromatography and others
Diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration until a uniform concentration is achieved. It is brought about by the random movement of particles and it takes place independently of gravity.
Atomicity
Number of atoms a molecule has
Sublimation
Change of state from solid to gas directly, without becoming a liquid first, when a substance is heated
Boiling point
Temperature at which liquid boils and turns from liquid to gas
Condensation
When a gas is cooled below boiling point of the gas and so the gas liquefies
Exothermic
Exothermic reaction releases heat
Immiscible
Substances that don’t mix together
Inflammable
Something that catches fire easily
