CCP (Chinese Communist Party)
The ruling political party of China, founded in 1921. It led the country to Communism in 1949 under the leadership of Mao Zedong
Guomindang (GMD,Nationalists)
The Nationalists party of China, established by Sun Yatsen. It was the ruling party before the Communists took over in 1949 led by Chiang Kai-Shek
The 100 Flowers Campaign
A movement initiated by Mao Zedong in 1956 encouraging citizens to express their opinions on the communist regime. It was short-lived, as it led to serve repercussions against those who criticised the government
The Red Army
The armed forces of the CCP during the Chinese civil war and the precursor to the peoples liberation army
The Red Guards
A mass student-led paramilitary social movement mobilised by Mao during the cultural revolution (1966-76) aimed to preserve communist ideology by purging people who did not agree
The Little Red Book
A book of quotations from Mao Zedong, widely distributed during the Cultural Revolution to spread his teachings and enforce communist ideology
The One Child Policy
A policy implemented by the Chinese Government in 1979 to control population growth, which limited families to having only one child
