Aboriginal/Indigenous people
Indigenous peoples in Canada are the indigenous peoples within the boundaries of Canada. They comprise the First Nations, Inuit and Métis
Civic nationalism
A vision of a national as a community open to all those devoted to its political institutions and social values.
Country
=”Nation-state”
Strictly a geographic perspective like physical borders.
Cultural Pluralism
when smaller groups within larger societies maintain their unique cultural identities
Ethic
of or relating to races or large groups of people who have the same customs, religion, origin, etc
Ethic nationalism
a form of nationalism wherein the nation is defined in terms of ethnicity
First Nations
The First Nations are groups of Canadian indigenous peoples
Identity
A social categorization theory based on the concept of social identity, the component of one’s self-image that stems from belonging to a group.
Ideology
a theory or concept about the way in which society should be organized
ex.) democracy [belief system]
Inuit
The Inuit are a group of culturally similar indigenous peoples inhabiting the Arctic regions of Greenland, Canada, and Alaska.
International
“between countries or nation states”. refers to the interactions between them (political, economic, and social)
Linguistic Nation
a group of people who share the same language; shared language creates a sense of unity
Metis
Métis are people of mixed European and Indigenous ancestry, and one of the three recognized Aboriginal peoples in Canada.
Multinational state
A multinational state or a multinational union is a sovereign entity that comprises two or more nations or states. This contrasts a nation state, where a single nation accounts for the bulk of the population.
Nation
people who feel a sense of belonging together and want control of their own future. They may or may not have a government or official borders.
