What are norms?
Normal human behaviour accepted by society e.g. Greeting someone with a handshake.
What is primary socialisation?
Occurs during early childhood. The main agents are:
- parents and family members
- anyone who’s close to you (e.g.nanny)
What is secondary socialisation?
Occurs through childhood to adulthood. The agents are:
- peers (age/social group)
- school and teachers
- religion
- media
What are values?
Beliefs shared by society.
What is culture?
The way of life shared by society.
What is social differentiation?
Subcultures within a culture that share the same norms and values.
What is stratification?
The hierarchy of different layers in society based on power and money.
What is achieved status?
Earned position through behaviour and choices
What is ascribed status?
A position your born into e.g. Royal family
What is social mobility?
Movement through social hierarchy. Upward or downward social mobility
What are demographics?
Categorising people into gender, ethnicity and religion, etc.
What are subcultures?
Small groups in bigger culture
Explain the key theory on Marxism?
-The economy is the key driving force
What is socialisation?
Is the process by which we learn the norms and values that are appropriate for our culture.
