Key concepts in chemistry Flashcards
Where are non metals found in the periodic table?
On the right, marked by and including a diagonal line downwards and to the right starting with boron. Hydrogen is also a non-metal
What are the elements that have 2 atoms forming a molecule? (e.g. O2)
I Bring Clay For Our New House is a mnemonic that I can use.
Iodine, Bromine, Chlorine, Fluorine, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen
What is the bond between two atoms where electrons are shared?
Covalent bond. This usually occurs between non-metals.
What is the bond between two atoms where one electron is given to the other atom?
Ionic Bond. This usually occurs between a metal and a non-metal.
What is the Mnemonic for the elements with 2 atoms?
I bring Clay For Our New House.
Iodine, Bromine, Chlorine, Fluorine, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen.
What does Aqueous mean?
Dissolved in water to form a solution
What is a precipitation reaction?
When two soluble reactants form an insoluble product and a soluble product.
What is an Ionic Bond?
A bond where one electron is given from one atom to the other. This occurs between a METAL and a NON METAL.
What is a Covalent Bond?
A bond where two non metals share electrons. This occurs between a NON METAL and a NON METAL.
What is a Metallic Bond?
When metal atoms bond with themselves, being held together by forces of attraction. There are no negative ions in Metallic bonding, as the negative DELOCALISED ELECTRONS are what the positive ions are attracted to.
