Key Concepts in Biology Flashcards
What is Magnification?
The process of enlarging the physical appearance/ image of something
Formula for Magnification
Image size/Actual size
What is Resolution?
The ability to distinguish between two points as two separate structures
An image size of the water flea is shown at 157mm long. The actual size is 1mm. What is the magnification of the water flea?
157/1=157mm
Formula for Total Magnification
Eyepiece x Objective = Total
magnification Magnification Magnification
Electron Microscope
Electron microscope uses electron to pass through a specimen to see an image.
Allows us to see cells/ microorganisms in greater detail.
Why is an Electon Microscope more convenient than a Light Microscope?
Electron Microscope has a higher magnification and a lower resolution which allows us to see cells/ microorganisms in greater detail
How to convert Millemetre to Metre
x1000
The image shows an artery. It is magnified 20x. Calculate the actual width of the artery wall in micrometres:
M=I/A
A=I/M
A=26/20=1.3
1.3x1000=13000
=1300
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
A cell with a Nucleus
What is a cell with no nucleus called?
Prokaryotic
Name the function of Cell Membrane:
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Function of Nucleus
controls the cell and contains cells DNA
Function of Cytoplasm
Cell activities occur and chemical reaction takes place here
Function of Mitochondria
Aerobic respiration occurs and releases energy in cell
