What is CBT?
A widely used counselling technique that focusses on cognitive and behavioural strategies as the central components of therapeutic change.
What is the basic premise of CBT?
That distressing emotions are the result of problematic thoughts and behaviours. As emotions are difficult to change, CBT aims to target distressing emotions by using cognitive and behavioural therapeutic strategies to change the thoughts and behaviours underlying them.
Definition of CBT
A form of counselling / therapy based based upon the underpinning concept that maladaptive thinking patterns cause maladaptive behaviours which, in turn, cause interference, dysfunction, and counter-productive impacts on everyday living.
It is a time-limited, action oriented, client-inclusive practice of changing thought patterns to change behaviours and feelings/emotions.
