Key Concepts Flashcards
Geographic Coordinate System
Uses latitude and longitude.
Projected Coordinate System
Flattens the Earth’s surface onto a 2D plane.
Geocoding
Process of converting addresses to geographic coordinates.
Overlay
Combines multiple layers of data.
Remote Sensing
Collection of data about the Earth’s surface from satellites or aircraft.
Geoenrichment
Aggregates demographic data and local facts for locations around the world. Provides insight about the people and places near a location by adding demographic variables and local information to existing geographic data.
Points
Single locations (e.g., trees, fire hydrants)
Lines
Linear features (e.g., roads, rivers)
Polygons
Enclosed areas (e.g., lakes, property boundaries)
Attribute Data
Provides additional information about geographic features. Typically stored in tables and linked to spatial features
