Key Area 6 - Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
The process by which energy is released during the breakdown of glucose.
What is aerobic respiration?
When oxygen is present aerobic respiration can occur.
What is the general word equation for respiration?
Glucose -Enzymes - CO2 and water and ATP
How is the chemical energy stored in glucose released?
Through a series of enzyme-controlled reactions
What is ATP?
An energy transfer molecule
What is ATP used for?
An immediate source of chemical energy in cells
Give some examples of cellular activities that require energy from ATP?
- Muscle cell contraction
- Cell division
- Protein synthesis
- Transmission of nerve impulses
- Active transport
What is aerobic respiration?
The breakdown of glucose into carbon dioxide, water and ATP in the presence of oxygen
Where does aerobic respiration begin and end?
Begins in the cytoplasm and ends in the mitochondria
