Key area 5- Human Genomics Flashcards
What is a genome of an organism?
. Its the organism’s entire hereditary information encoded in DNA
What is the human genome?
The complete set of genetic information found in a human and it is made up of genes and other DNA sequences that do not code for proteins
What is Human genomics?
.It is the study of the human genome
What is Bioinformatics?
. The name given to the fusion of molecular biology, statistical analysis and computer technology to identify and analyse DNA sequences
What is pharmacogenetics?
. The use of genome information in the choice of drugs used to treat certain diseases and conditions, as an individuals genome can be analysed to predict the likelihood of developing certain diseases
What is personalised medicine?
. The use of an individuals personal genome sequence to select the most effective drugs and dosage to treat their disease
.Through understanding the genetic component of disease, personalised medicine and treatment can be tailored to the individual
What is required to compare sequence data?
.Computer and statistical analyses are required
What do computer programmes do?
.They can be used to identify base sequences by looking for sequences similar to known genes
