Key area 3.4 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
What’s the function of chlorophyll ?
A
It traps the light energy from the sun and converts it to chemical energy
The chemical energy is used to make food like sugars
2
Q
What are the three fates of glucose ?
A
It’s used to make cellulose for cell walls
It can be stored as starch
It’s used in respiration
3
Q
Name and describe stage one of photosynthesis
A
Light Reactions
- It happens in the chloroplasts
- Water is split in to hydrogen + oxygen
- Oxygen is produced and excess diffuses into the air
- Light energy converts to chemical energy in the form ATP
- ATP + hydrogen are transferred to stage 2
4
Q
Name and describe stage two of photosynthesis
A
Carbon Fixation
- It’s a series of enzyme controlled reactions that form a cycle
- ATP produced in stage one provides the energy for this process
- Hydrogen in stage one combines with carbon dioxide from the air to form glucose
5
Q
Name the 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis
A
Carbon Dioxide Concentration
Temperature
Light Intensity
6
Q
How can the rate of photosynthesis be measured ?
A
The rate of carbon dioxide uptake
Rate of O2 production
Rate of build up of starch/ carbohydrate
