Key area 3.4 - Photosynthesis Flashcards

1
Q

What’s the function of chlorophyll ?

A

It traps the light energy from the sun and converts it to chemical energy

The chemical energy is used to make food like sugars

Q

Name and describe stage one of photosynthesis

A

Light Reactions

  • It happens in the chloroplasts
  • Water is split in to hydrogen + oxygen
  • Oxygen is produced and excess diffuses into the air
  • Light energy converts to chemical energy in the form ATP
  • ATP + hydrogen are transferred to stage 2

Q

Name and describe stage two of photosynthesis

A

Carbon Fixation

  • It’s a series of enzyme controlled reactions that form a cycle
  • ATP produced in stage one provides the energy for this process
  • Hydrogen in stage one combines with carbon dioxide from the air to form glucose
