Key Area 3 Flashcards
What causes a complex ion to be paramagnetic?
The transition metal has a half filled d-subshell
When writing the electronic configuration for ions, where are the electrons removed from first?
The 4s orbital
What is a dative covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons from the same atom
How can transition metals act as catalysts?
They have:
-Incomplete d orbitals
-Variable oxidation states
-Unpaired d electrons
How do ligands bond to metal atoms to form complexes?
Ligands can form dative covalent bonds (with the transition metal ion)
What is a bidentate ligand?
A ligand with two parts that can donate electron pairs to the (central) metal ion
What causes d orbital splitting in octahedral complexes?
Lone pairs/Non-bonding electron pairs in the ligand
