Key Area 2.3 Metabolic rate Flashcards
What is the metabolic rate?
The quantity of energy consumed by an organism per unit time.
What are some ways that metabolic rate can be measured?
- Oxygen consumption
- Carbon dioxide production
- Energy production in the form of heat.
What is a respirometer?
A respirometer measures O2 uptake or CO2 out put of an organism over a period of time.
What kind of heart system does a fish have?
A single circulatory system.
How many atria and ventricles does a single circulatory system have?
One of each.
How many times does the blood pass through the heart per circuit in a single circulatory system?
Once.
In what way do fish allow oxygen to enter the blood?
Through the gills.
What kind of heart system does amphibians and reptiles have?
Double incomplete.
Why is a reptile or amphibians heart incomplete?
It only has one ventricle, but 2 atria.
What happens to the deoxygenated and oxygenated blood because there is an incomplete system?
It is able to mix.
How do amphibians diffuse oxygen?
Through their moist skin.
What kind of heart system do mammals and birds have?
Double complete.
Why is the heart of mammals and birds described as complete?
It has 2 atria and 2 ventricles.
What does the complete heart system stop?
Mixing off oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
what heart system is the most efficient?
Double complete
