Key Area 2.3 (a) control and communication: nervous system Flashcards
Name the parts of the central nervous system
Brain & spinal cord
What are the three main types of neurons
Sensory neuron
Motor neuron
Relay neuron
Describe the function of the sensory neuron
Carry messages as electrical impulses from receptors in the sense organs towards the cns
Describe the of of the relay neuron
Messages carried as electrical impulses through the cns to motor neurons
Describe the job of motor neurons
Carry messages as electrical impulses from the CNS to the muscles or glands that are the effectors.
What do the motor neurons enable
Motor neurons enable the effectors to make a response which can be a rapid action from a muscle or a slower response from a gland
What is the function of the cerebrum
Site of conscious thought, reasoning, memory, emotions, personality, intelligence, language etc.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Centre of balance, co-ordination and movement
State the function of the medulla
Centre of control for breathing and heart rate ( automatic functions )
Name the parts of the nervous system
Neurons , brain, spinal cord
