KEY AREA 2: Distribution Of Organisms Flashcards
What does abiotic and biotic factors do?
They are the distribution of organism in an ecosystem that can be affected by biotic and abiotic factors
What is a biotic factor?
Any living factor that affects another organisms or shapes the ecosystem in some way
What is a Abiotic factor?
Non-living parts of the ecosystem that affect the ecosystem
What are biotic factors related to?
Biotic factors are those directly related to other living organisms
Examples of biotic factors?
- competition for resources
- food availability
- disease
- predation
- amount of grazing
What are Abiotic factors related to?
Abiotic factors are those to do with non-living properties of the environment
Examples of abiotic factors?
- temperature
- light intensity
- moisture
- PH
Abiotic factor is?
Abiotic factors are non-living factors that can affect the distribution of plants and animals in an ecosystem
What are the measuring techniques?
- Light Intensity/ moisture/ PH meter
- thermometer
What are the sampling techniques?
- Quadrat
- pitfall trap
What are the sampling techniques used for?
Quadrat - used to sample plants
Pitfall trap - used to samples animals / small insects
What are the errors of sampling techniques?
Quadrat - miscounting or placing Quadrat in particular area
Pitfall trap - insects escape or are eaten
What are ways to prevent the errors for sampling techniques?
Quadrat - count carefully & throw randomly on ground
Pitfall trap - add a cover / camouflaged and check regularly
What are the measuring techniques sampled for?
Light intensity / moisture / PH meter - it samples light intensity, moisture level and acid / alkali
Thermometer- it samples the temperature
What are the errors of measuring techniques?
Light intensity / moisture / PH meter - error in using meter, wrong reading and dirty probe
Thermometer- error in using meter, wrong reading and dirty probe
