Key Area 1 - Ecosystem Flashcards
What is biodiversity?
The total variation among living organisms within a region (rainforest, ocean, the Earth).
What is a producer?
Living organisms which make food using inorganic materials and an abiotic energy
(E.g. green plants produce sugars from CO2 and H2O, and light energy via the process of photosynthesis)
What is a consumer.
Living organisms which obtain food by feeding on producers or other consumers
What is a herbivore?
A living organism which only eats plant material.
What is a carnivore?
Living organisms which only eat other animals
What are omnivores?
Living organisms which eat both plants and animals
What is a predator?
Hunts, kills and feeds on another organism (its prey)
What is prey?
Is hunted, killed and fed on by another organism (its predator)
What is a habitat?
The area in which an organism lives
What is a population?
All the members of one species living in a habitat
What is a community?
All the plants, animals and microorganisms living in a habitat
What is a species?
A group of organisms that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring
What is a food chain?
A diagram showing the feeding relationships between different organisms
What is a food web?
The large number of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem
What is an ecosystem?
Habitat + Community
