What is the definition of semantics?
Meanings of words, both on their own and in relation to other words in the text.
What is the definition of Lexis?
Words and their origins.
What is the definition of high frequency lexis?
Words that appear often in everyday speech.
What is the definition of low frequency lexis?
Words that appear more rarely, such as specialist terms from a field, e.g. medicine.
What is the definition of Grammar?
The building blocks of sentences (words, phrases, clauses, etc.) and how they go together to mean something to the reader or listener.
What is the definition of syntax?
The order of the elements in a clause or sentence.
What is the definition of discourse?
Describes the structure of any text that is longer than a single sentence.
What is the definition of pragmatics?
What we really mean by what we say or write in a given context.
What is the definition of phonology?
The study of the sound system in the language and the effects of its particular features (i.e. looking at consonants, vowels, rhythms, stresses, pace).
What is the definition of phonetics?
The study of how we produce particular sounds (e.g. ‘t’ and ‘d’ are stop consonants produced by stopping the flow of air at the alveolar ridge, just behind the top set of teeth).
What is the definition of synonym?
A word that has a similar meaning to another word (e.g. ‘happy’ and ‘content’).
What is the definition of etymology?
The history of a word, including the language it came from, if appropriate, and when it began to be regularly used.
What is the definition of French / Latinate lexis?
Words derived from French or Latin, or both, are more rarely used; often seen as having higher status and /or being more specialist.
