Kety Flashcards
Aim
to see if there’s a genetic basis of schizophrenia
sample
34 patients from Denmark and 33 matched pairs controls (age, gender, age of adoption, social class)
IV n DV
IV = SZ sufferers and control group with no history of MI
DV = prevalence of SZ - related MI from family members
Method
• 463 adopted and bio families
• Danish family records used to locate both relatives
• 4 psychiatrists did blind test on each case to diagnose family members with SZ or not (removed 4 as couldn’t agree) - didn’t know if bio or adopted families
• identities revealed and assigned to adoptive family groups (IA or CA) and biological family groups (IB or CB)
Results
Of 150 biological relatives in index cases 13 (8.7%) had diagnosis of SZ
Of 156 biological relatives in control cases 3 (1.9%) had diagnosis of SZ
Weakness ETHNO
ethnocentric as all of SZ adoptees and families from one location and culture (Denmark) - results about genetics influences SZ might not apply to wider population
