Layers of the cornea

A
  1. Epithelium (several layers thick - can regenerate after injury without scarring)
  2. Bowman’s layer (does not regenerate - scars with damage)
  3. Stroma (thickest part - scars with damage)
  4. Descemet’s membrane (BM - regenerates after injury)
  5. Endothelium - does not regenerate - opacifies when damaged

  • Staph aureus
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Coagulase-negative staph
  • Pneumococcus
  • Often polymicrobial
