What were two goals of antitrust laws?
Outlaw unfair methods of competition and protect consumers by promoting competition in the marketplace.
Prohibits monopolies and actions that cause an unreasonable restraint of trade.
The Sherman Act (1890)
Supports the Sherman Act by prohibiting mergers that reduce competition or create monopolies
The Clayton Act (1914)
What did the FTC act do?
Created an agency to stop unfair competitive practices.
Define: Per Se
Guilt that is established on the face of circumstance. No need to prove guilt or intent. The act itself makes you guilty.
What is Redlining?
When cities would cross off areas of cities they considered “risky”. These judgements were often based on demographics.
What is Blockbusting?
When Real Estate agents would approach white families when the demographic started to shift in their neighborhood, telling them to sell their house before they couldn’t and to avoid property value dropping.
What is Steering?
Knowing the demographic make-up of all of the neighborhoods in the area, real estate agents engaged in steering to encourage whites to live in the “white areas” and all minorities to minority-prevalent areas.
