Keeping Healthy Flashcards
How does exercise lead to a better health
Exercise increases the amount of energy used by the body and decreases the amount of fat. It also builds muscle which helps boost your metabolic rate.
What is metabolic rate?
The speed at which chemical reactions occur in the body
How can inherited factors affect metabolic rate?
Some inherited factors can cause an under active thyroid gland, which lowers metabolic rate and causes obesity
How can inherited factors affect blood cholesterol/health?
Cholesterol is a fatty substance that’s essential for good health - it’s found in every cell of the body. Some inherited factors increase blood cholesterol levels, which increases the risk of heart disease
What can saturated fat do to the body?
Raise cholesterol levels
What can salt do to the body?
Lead to health problems including high blood pressure and heart problems
How can lifestyle affect health?
Lifestyle includes what you eat and what you do. A person who eats too much carbohydrates and sugar and who does it exercise may end up obese
How do you recognise a false slimming claim?
- Is the report a scientific study, published in a reputable journal?
- Was it written by a qualified person?
- Was the sample of people asked/tested large enough to give reliable results?
- Have there been other studies which found similar results?
What factor can tell if a diet is more or less effective than just eating less and exercising more?
A large survey- these are not done very often
How will diet and slimming products work?
Only if:
- You eat less fat or carbohydrates (to take in less energy)
- You do more exercise (to use more energy)
How can some Claims be true but misleading?
Low fat bars may be low in fat but eating them without changing the rest of your diet means that you may not lose weight- you could still be taking in too much energy
