KEEPING A SAFE NAVIGATIONAL WATCH Flashcards

1
Q

Collision regulations is split into 3 sections, what are they

Q

Why should a “vessel at all times proceed at a safe speed”?

A

So that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions.

Q

What factors should all vessels take into account when determining a safe speed?

A

State of visibility.

Traffic density.

Maneuverability of the vessel.

At night the presence of background light.

The state of wind, sea and current, and the proximity of navigational hazards.

The draught in relation to the available depth of water

Q

Why is it important to use radar in sea stabilized mode for collision avoidance

A

If there is a current present the sea stabilized mode will more accurately show the heading of targets on the display and therefore aspect. This is important for applying the colregs which are mainly based on aspect.

Q

Except where rules 9,10 and 13 otherwise require a power driven vessel shall keep out of the way of?

A

A vessel not under command

A vessel restricted in her ability to Manoeuvre

A vessel engaged in fishing

A sailing vessel

17
Q

In rule 19 what actions should be taken upon encountering restricted visibility

A

Proceed at a safe speed

Have her engines ready for immediate manoeuvre

18
Q

If a vessel detects by radar alone the presence of another vessel and a close quarters situation is developing she must take avoiding action. What should be avoided as far as possible if she alters course?

A

An alteration of course to port for a vessel forward of the beam, other than for a vessel being overtaken.

An alteration of course towards a vessel abeam or abaft the beam.

19
Q

What fog signal would the following sound.

Cross Chanel ferry
Tanker
Supply vessel stopped
Fishing vessel with gear on deck

A

At intervals of not more than 2 minutes one prolonged blast

20
Q

What fog signal would the flowing vessel sound.

Sailing vessel under sail.

Survey vessel restricted in maneuverability

A

At intervals of not more than 2 minutes three blasts in succession, namely one prolonged followed by 2 short blasts

21
Q

List 6 reasons for calling the master to the bridge

A

Restricted visibility

Not sighting land or navigational mark when expected. Or when you didn’t expect.

Difficult in maintaining course due to weather

Traffic situation requiring master

Master has requested a call in the standing orders
