Are you required to indicate when exiting a roundabout?
Yes.
Before entering a roundabout, driver must indicate:
Left - if intending to exit by the first left.
Right - if going more than halfway round.
If going straight ahead, do not indicate on entry.
Do PO’s have an exemption from wearing seat belts?
Yes
If PO travelling with another EO/PO and impractical/undesirable to wear a seat helot.
Is driving a motor vehicle that is being used by an EO in the execution of the officers duty.
Do PO’s have an exemption from the give way rules?
If driver of emergency vehicles displaying a blue or red beacon or blue and red beacon, or sounding a siren may enter and cross an intersection:
At speed not exceeding 20km per hour
Taking care to avoid a collision with other traffic.
Are PO exempt from the requirement to have a current Certificate of Inspection (WOF)?
No
When proceeding against a red traffic signal or stop sign when undertaking urgent duty driving, what met you do?
- Reduce vehicle speed so do not exceed 20km per hour.
* Proceed through the intersection taking due care to avoid collision with pedestrians and other traffic.
While responding to an urgent duty job, you travel through a 30 km/h temporary speed road works area.
Do you have a legal defence to travel above the posted temporary speed limit?
Yes in the execution of your duty.
Because it is high risk it is recommended that:
- Where practical comply with the temporary speed limit area.
- Exceed temp speed limits only when you have checked that the way is clear of hazards.
Do PO’s have a defence to exceed speed limits?
Yes, in urgent duty and pursuit.
While you are responding to a critical incident, you proceed through an intersection against a red traffic light.
What are your obligations?
Reduce sped so not exceed 20km per hour.
Proceed with sire sounding and red/blue lights flashing, taking care to avoid collision with pedestrians and other traffic.
When overtaking other vehicles, is there an exemption for PO drivers on urgent duty response or pursuit to drive to the right of solid yellow no passing lines?
Yes in the execution of your duty.
As high risk manoeuvre it is recommended where practical:
Wait until after no passing lines
Carry out on slow or stationary traffic and only when the way is clear.
Before using a police vehicle do you have to carry out an inspection of it?
Yes
Inspect if for any damage/defects and report promptly any such damage/defect found or coming under their notice while the vehicle is in their charge.
Comms direct you to attend a motor vehicle crash at a busy intersection. It is u/k whether there is an injury, but the road appears to be blocked.
On the way you activate a speed camera.
What would you need to prove to have the notice waived?
Have to prove that compliance with speed limited, traffic signals or stop/give way signs would be likely to prevent or hinder the execution of your duty.
ie urgent duty -
Responding to a critical incident.
Apprehending a driver for a traffic/criminal offence.
Engaging in a pursuit.
As the passenger of a 2 person patrol inv in urgent duty response, what are your responsibilities?
Advise driver:
Route
Environment and risks
Operate radio, speak to comms
What is the overriding principle of urgent duty driving policy?
No duty is so urgent that it requires the public or police to be placed at unjustified risk.
Police must drive at an appropriate speed and manner and bear in mind that they:
- Are legally responsible for their actions.
- Must prioritise public and police safety.
As the passenger of a 2 person patrol involved in a a pursuit, what are your responsibilities?
Assist the driver by:
Operating the radio
Advising them of environmental and other considerations.
If you are senior in rank or service, you may also direct them to abandon the pursuit.
When may a driver with bronze classification undertake urgent duty driving?
Only if a gold driver provides direct supervision.
