KARL LANDSTEINER Flashcards
What was the problem with blood up until this moment?
Most attempts at blood transfusions were fatal because of the limited scientific knowledge of doctors
Who was Karl Landsteiner?
An Austrian doctor
What did Karl Landsteiner discover?
In 1901 he discovered that there were different blood groups; A, B, and O
What did Karl Landsteiner later discover?
In 1902 he discovered the fourth blood group AB
What did doctors begin to realise in the 1900s?
Doctors began to realise giving a wrong blood type to a patient in a transfusion would kill them but also that O was a universal blood group (even though they didn’t understand y)
How did this knowledge of blood groups impact medicine?
Transfusions could be carried out successfully,
Who could this knowledge of blood groups help?
people with blood disorders, (anaemia)
However what was a limiting(problem) factor to this knowledge?
A blood donor had to be present so the transfusion could to be carried out, and it was hard to find donors of the RIGHT blood groups
What was the other problem with blood?
Blood begins to clot once it leaves the body so the tubes for the transfusions became blocked
How was this knowledge beneficial/positive?
It was an improvement to scientific knowledge
However how was this knowledge negative/limited?
progress in surgery could NOT ADVANCE, despite, the new KNOWLEDGE unless there was ways developed to combat blood clotting and blood storage
