what are class one plurals

A

approx. 10%. they are all common nouns, and the majority end in -a in the singular. the -a is dropped before the plural ending -or:
ex. en flicka, flickan, flickor, flickorna (a girl, the girl, girls, the girls)
ex. en karta, kartan, kartor, kartorna (a map, the map, maps, the maps)

what are class 2 plurals

A

approx. 40%. they are all common in gender. all take the plural ending -ar. the second declension includes:
1. most monosyllabic common nouns ending in a constant
ex. en arm, armen, armar, armarna (a arm, the arm, arms, the arms)
2. monosyllabic common nouns ending in a vowel
ex. en fru, frun, fruar, fruarna (a wife, the wife, wives, the wives)
3. most common nouns of more than one syllable ending in unstressed -e, -er, -el, or -en. note that these nouns drop the unstressed -e- when the plural ending is added.
ex. en pojke, pojken, pojkar, pojkarna (a boy, the boy, boys, the boys)
4. common nouns ending in -dom or -ning
ex. en sjukdom, sjukdomen, sjukdomar, sjukdomarna
5. there are a few second declension nouns that have irregular plural forms
ex. en dotter, dottern, döttrar, döttrarna (a daughter, the daughter, daughters, the daughters)

what are class 3 plurals

A

approx. 20%. the plural ending for this declension is -er. the main categories for 3rd declension nouns are:
1. many monosyllabic nouns ending in a constant
ex. en rätt, rätten, rätter, rätterna (a right, the right, rights, the rights)
2. all nouns ending in -eum or -ium. in the plural, these nouns drop the -um when the plural ending is added
ex. ett museum, museet, museer, museerna (a museum, the museum, museums,
3. some common nouns ending in a vowel. the plural ending for thee nouns is -r instead of -er.
ex. en sko, skon, skor, skorna (a shoe, the shoe, shoes, the shoes)
4. there are 17 nounds that modify their stem vowels.
ex. en brand, branden, bränder, bränderna (a fire, the fire, fires, the fires)
5. common nouns ending in -het, -nad, -else, -är, -arie, -ation, -ör, -ent, -sion. all neuter nouns ending in -eri.
