Kantian Ethics Flashcards
Key person of Kantian Ethics
Immanuel Kant
The key aspect of Kantian Ethics
Intentions
What does reason mean
the ability to work out through reflection the question of what you are to do
What does intention mean
what is ‘aimed for’ when acting. Why you are doing what you are doing
What does Universalisable mean
describes an action that could be done by all, all the time, without contradiction.
What does Kant think about consequences
He thinks that the rightness or wrongness of actions does not depend on their consequences but on our intentions.
So how do you know the right thing to do?
- Could everyone act as I propose to act? Is my action universalisable?
- Does my action respect everyone or am I using people as a means to an end?
- If I made the laws for the world to ensure that everyone was treated with dignity, what would they be?
Criticisms of Kantian Ethics
Inflexible and
Consequences are more important than intentions
