Kant Flashcards
what kind of ethical theory is Kantian
Deontological
Kantian laws are
prescriptivist and absolutist
Good will is when duty is
carried out for the duty’s sake
The Good Will “Shines
forth like a precious jewel”
What is a categorical imperative?
Unconditional command that is binding to everyone at all times, based on reason
What is a hypothetical imperative?
Contains an ‘if’ statement
What are the three principles of the categorical imperative?
1- “always act in such a way that the maxim of your action can be willed as a universal law for all humanity”
2-“Always treat humans beings as an end in themselves, never simply as a means to an end”
3- “act as if you were a law-maker in a kingdom of ends”(role-model)
A law can be universalised if it is not a contradiction in
nature and in the will
What are the strengths of Kantian ethics?
Prescriptive
Based on reason
Deontological
Absolutist
Contradiction in the will develops empathy
Personalistic
What are the weaknesses of Kantian ethics?
Doesn’t consider consequences
Reason can lead to different conclusions
Not compassionate
Not flexible
Doing duty for duty’s sake does not breed morally good people
Universal laws don’t consider
Sometimes people are a means to an end
