the sea - traditional way of life, close links to the sea have a timeless quality. pilot’s vivid memories suggests what he is about to lose and a sense of homesickness
family life - repeated references to family members throughout, the story of this pilot is told to a whole new generation of grandchildren, who may have never met him, establishing the consequences of the pilots decision - his entire family and community judge him.
