CONTEXT:
What were kamikaze pilots tasked with?
-During WW2, Japanese kamikaze pilots flew manned suicide missions into military targets (e.g) ships, using planes filled with explosives
-Soldiers and pilots were told it was the only way of changing the direction of the war (Japan losing) and that they were required to take part in this last resort
-Well trained pilots would volunteer to die but towards the end of the war, the military would recruit people and shun those who refuse
CONTEXT:
What was the culture/cultural expectations of kamikaze pilots?
-Named after a typhoon that wiped out enemy ships in 13th century ➡️ links to nature being the true source of power
-Japense culture was very patriotic, military was focused on fighting and dying for the country
-Has the sentiment that it was better to be killed than named a coward
-Dishonour would stain the whole family, bravery was valued above all else
