Quote 1 “strung out like bunting”
simile of the positive imagery of celebration juxtaposes the later negative tone when he returns home and implies he would have been honoured if he died, emphasising glory for dying for your country - links to how poet wanted to explore why people died for their country and eventually became a part of the collection ‘The Invention of Fireworks’
semantic field of signals shows he feels different/stands out
“strung out” hints to death/ the mission
Quote 2 “he must have wondered which had been the better way to die”
“must” modal verb shows he wasn’t asked and he was ignored, showing the values of Japan and immense social pressure and themes of patriotism and the narrative perspective must be from his granddaughter, who feels guilty - shift from internal to external and detached tone suggests she wants to be detached from him
enjambment and free verse reflects his desire to free, juxtaposing tight stanzas which represent tight military control
it is ironic as it implies he welcomes death as he was disowned - accepts fate
Quote 3 “he no longer existed”
“he” pronoun shows lack of respect and loss of identity as he is dehumanised
relates to military pressures to go through with it
it is non-literal and is symbolic of how he was disgraced by his family
