food pyramid
a triangle-shaped diagram that shows how much of each food group you should include in a healthy diet; foods you should eat a lot of are located at the bottom of the pyramid and foods you should eat least are located at the top
ghrelin
a hormone released by the stomach when it is empty, making you feel hungry
hormone
a substance produced by the body to control a particular function, such as hunger, sleep or growth
hunger regulation system
the organs and substances in the body that work together to control when you feel hungry or full
hunter-gatherer
a person who survives by hunting animals and gathering berries, nuts and other plant foods; hunter-gatherers need to travel around to find food instead of settling in one place
instinct
a type of behaviour that is inherited instead of being learned
legume
the seed or fruit of a certain type of plant, including peas, beans and peanuts
leptin
a hormone released by the stomach when you’ve had enough to eat, making you feel full
neurotransmitter
a substance released by the brain to perform a particular function
NPY
a neurotransmitter in the brain; high levels of NPY make you feel hungry and low levels make you feel full
nutrient
a substance that the body needs to be healthy, usually obtained from food
Palaeolithic
relating to the early Stone Age, extending from about 2.5 million years ago to about 10,000 years ago
