Kennedy classification
Class 1
Class 2
Class 3
Class 4
Class 1- bilateral free ended saddles
Class 2- unilateral free ended saddle
Class 3- unilateral bounded saddle
Class 4- single anterior bilateral bounded saddle
Saddle
Support
Retention
-Direct retention
Saddle- the component which rests on and covers edentulous areas and carries artificial teeth
Support- components that provide resistance to vertical forces directed towards the mucosa
Retention- resists displacement of denture
- direct retention = clasps
- resist forces that act to displace denture away from tissues
Abutment tooth
Survey line
Reciprocation
Abutment tooth- tooth adjacent to saddle that may be used for support
Survey line- position of maximum convexity on a tooth in relation to the path of insertion in which clasp engages below
Reciprocation- resists horizontal force applied to tooth when clasp displaced over survey line to prevent tooth moving within PD space
Fulcrum axis
Guide planes
Fulcrum axis- axis around which a tooth and mucosa Bourne denture tends to rock when saddles are loaded
Guide planes- two or more parallel surfaces on abutment teeth used to limit the path of insertion and improve retention and stability
