KA2 The cerebral cortex Flashcards
What is the function of the medulla?
The medulla regulates the basic processes of breathing, heart rate and sleep
What is the function of the cerebellum?
The cerebellum controls balance, posture and movement
What is the cerebral cortex?
It is the centre of conscious thought
It also recalls memories and alters behaviour in the light of experience.
What are the three types of functional areas in the cerebrum?
Sensory- receives info as sensory impulses from the body’s receptors eg touch
Association- analyse and interpret these impulses (makes sense)
Motor- receives info from the association areas and send motor impulses to appropriate effectors
What side of the brain is the speech motor area on?
The left cerebral hemisphere
What are the distinct association areas involved in?
Language processing
Personality
Imagination
Intelligence
Where is information from one side of the body processed?
In the opposite side
Eg seeing things with your right eye is processed in the left cerebral hemisphere
How is info transferred between cerebral hemispheres?
By the corpus callosum
