Q

What is the nervous system made up of?

A

The nervous system is divided into two systems. The central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The peripheral nervous system is further divided into two systems. The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.

Q

What is the function of somatic nervous system?

A

The somatic nervous system contains sensory and motor neurones and itโ€™s main function is to control voluntary movement of skeletal muscles.

Q

What does the autonomic nervous system control?

A

It controls involuntary actions that regulates the bodyโ€™s internal environment.

Q

How different are the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems to each other?

A

They are very different as these two systems are antagonistic in action ( they exert opposite influences).

Q

What are the antagonistic actions of the sympathetic and parasympathetic system when it comes to heart rate, breathing rate, peristalsis and intestinal secretions?

A

During sympathetic response the heart increases, breathing rate increases, peristalsis decreases and intestinal secretions decrease. Surfing parasympathetic response heart rate decreases, breathing rate decreases, peristalsis increases, and intestinal secretions decrease.

Q

What is a neuron pathway?

A

Neurones connected to each other through synapses, forming neural pathways through the nervous system.

Q

What is a converging neuron pathway?

A

In a converging neural pathway, impulses from several neurones travel to one neurone. This increases the sensitivity to excitatory or inhibitory signals.

Q

What is a diverging neuron pathway?

A

In a diverging neural pathway, impulses from one Neuton travel to several neurones, affecting more than one destination at the same time.

Q

What is reverberating neuron pathway?

A

In a reverberating pathway, neurones in later pathway link with earlier neurones, sending the impulse back through the pathway. This allows repeated stimulation of the pathway.
