species
a population of organisms that can interbreed to create fertile offspring
population
the number of organisms in one species
community
means all the different organisms in one area
biodiversity
the variety of different species, the variation within the species and the variety of habitats
producer
an organism that makes its own food by photosynthesis
consumer
cannot make its own food therefore has to consume other organisms
herbivore
only eat plant material
carnivore
only eat meat/other animals
omnivore
eat both plants and animals
predators
are animals that eat other animals. They are carnivores
prey
are organisms that are eaten by predators
habitat
the area in which the organism lives and where it can find:
- food
- shelter
- protection
- and mates for reproduction
ecosystem
an ecosystem consists of all the organisms (the community) living in a particular habitat and the non-living components with which the organisms interact
food chain
shows how much energy is passed on from organism to organism. Food chains always start with a producer
